Is It Good to Aerate Pool Water?

A dip in the swimming pool in the hot summer months is a quick way to cool down. However, if the pool water isn’t a cool, refreshing temperature or seems stale, it won’t be nearly as refreshing.

One of the solutions to this problem is a pool aerator. Of course, not everyone needs to aerate their pool water, but it comes with many benefits. Here are a few to consider.

It increases the pH level of the water

Hard water has lower pH levels and is known to be more alkaline. If the water used to fill the pool is ‘hard,’ it could lead to calcium scaling, leading to corrosion and scaly build-up in the water.

The pool aerator can’t change the pH levels of the pool water on its own. However, if you add muriatic acid, a chemical that aims to lower the alkalinity of the water and turn on the aerator, the pH levels will increase. Without the aerator, it could be much more challenging to distribute the muriatic acid in the water.

It promotes water circulation

The average pool aerator sends streams of water into the air, which oxygenates the water it drops back into the pool. It’s an efficient way to infuse more oxygen into the water. This process also helps mix other sanitizing elements in the water, which continue to do their job and keep the pool clean.

Additionally, these streams help move the water around. Stagnant water is a major issue for swimming pools. If there’s no circulation, algae can accumulate, and ultimately much more cleaning will be required.

It cools down the water

When air temperatures are incredibly high over a prolonged period, the pool water can become uncomfortably warm. An aerator is an efficient method to cool down the pool water, especially if the nights are warm.

Additionally, cooling down the water will ensure that the chlorine lasts longer as it dissolves more quickly in the warm water. The aerator might be an investment up front but can save money in the long run.

Other ways to aerate the pool water

The aerator is small and easy to use, but it’s not the only way to aerate the pool water. Leveraging other water features is an option too.

Deck jets are pretty much the same as pool aerators, but they’re located on the deck. Another option is a pool mister, which is typically installed at the waterline. The misting effect is more than enough to keep the water cool and circulating throughout the day.

Keeping the pool water cool and clean

Maintenance is incredibly important for the overall pool experience. It doesn’t matter if it’s the above-ground pool or a relatively shallow pool; some effort is necessary. Aerating pool water is a critical step to making sure it doesn’t transform into a swamp in days. It’s also a beneficial strategy to keep the water cool and refreshing the whole summer.
